N.B These are planned game mechanics and structure, Subject to change.
CREATING YOUR FIRST CREW
When you first start up Spirit of Sail you will be prompted to generate your first set of Officers. These first Officers consist of four men; Captain, Sailing Master, Quartermaster and one of the players choice from the remaining available roles. This allows players to specialise their ship from the beginning.
Stat/Skill Generation
Players are first presented with a statistics screen and from here they can name their crew members, customise their appearance and of course generate (roll) their Officers ability scores. Ability scores are tied into the physical appearance of your crew members, for example a character with very high strength would be very muscular and well built, whereas a much lower strength character would appear slim. Once you have generated your crew's statistics you then assign them their role aboard ship starting with selecting a Captain, then Sailing master, a Quartermaster and finally one from the other available posts on ship. It is important to note that these Abilities can be re-rolled, but are balanced in such a way that players cannot generate superhero characters. A Ship can a have a maximum of eight officers on board but when starting out a player will only have (and probably only need) four.
Gaining Officers and Crew in Game
Once you have your first set of officers generated, any more officers you gain will generally either be promoted from your crew themselves or hired from ports. "Hired" Officers skills are generated based on your Captain's ability to find suitable candidates, and are not rolled in the way a Starting Officers abilities are.
Recruiting Officers.
Every officer has a first and second mate which they select from the crew under their command. In the event of an Officer dying his first mate will take his mantle. If the player wishes to replace an Officer then he can head to a Port and attempt to recruit. If the Captain is successful in recruiting he will be presented with a list of available characters and their respective Abilities and Skills, along with their price. The captain can choose to employ one or more of these men if he wishes and they will immediately take their assigned role.
