Spirit of sail uses a triad of statistics to allow for very diverse crew members. These statistics are Abilities, Primary Skills and Secondary Skills. Abilities govern the highest number a character can achieve in any particular Primary Skill and Primary Skills govern the starting score in the Secondary Skills they have domain over. As a player progresses through the game their secondary skills increase as they are used, which in turn increases the score in the governing Primary Skill, to the maximum allowed as set by their Ability score.
Abilities
Abilities are a set number between one and ten. Once a character's ability scores are generated they cannot be increased. In essence an ability represents a characters maximum potential in a given area.
Strength
Represents a character's physical power. For example a character with high strength would be much better in a brawl than a character with low strength.
Agility
Represents a character's speed and ability to manipulate objects effectively. A character with high agility would be a much more effective carpenter than a character with a low agility score.
Presence
Represents a character's personality and ability to command, characters with low presence make much worse leaders than those with higher scores.
Intelligence
Represents a character's ability to think fast, their wit and their knowledge. An officer with low intelligence is far more likely to make stupid decisions which could endanger their crews lives than one with a higher Intelligence score.
Primary Skills
Primary Skills are originally set by their governing ability's score. They increase as the Secondary skills the have domain over increase. There are two Primary Skills tied to each Ability.
Power
Power is governed by Strength and depicts how effective a character is at moving heavy objects like cannons and the amount of force behind a punch.
Endurance
Also governed by Strength, Endurance is a measure of how long a character can run, stay awake or swim for and how much punishment they can take in combat.
Speed
Speed is governed by Agility and is used to show how quickly a character can move and complete tasks.
Dexterity
Governed by Agility, Dexterity represents a characters fine manipulation skills, for example coiling a rope, tying knots or carving a figurehead.
Grace
Grace represents a character's benevolence and is governed by the Presence Ability. A character with low Grace is generally rude and uncharismatic, whereas a high Grace score depicts a pleasant, kind character.
Leadership
Also governed by Presence, Leadership simply represents a characters ability to lead a group in battle or inspire his crew to complete tasks.
Wisdom
Represents a character's knowledge and their ability to make intelligent decisions. A higher Wisdom score represents a more intelligent character. Governed by Intelligence.
Wit
Also governed by Intelligence, Wit represents how quick a thinker a character is and their ability to speak in public. A Captain with a high Wit score is more likely to gain influence with a Governor than a character with a lower score.
